I'm a Tradie, what type of insurance do I need?

At a minimum you should have Public & Products Liability insurance to protect you against claims by third parties for any damage you may cause to property, or injury caused to another person. If you are a company or have employees you will also need Workers Compensation to cover the medical & rehab costs associated with injury to employees, as well as their loss of earnings. If you are a sole trader or partnership, you would be wise to have a Personal Accident & Sickness policy to cover your loss of earnings in the event you cannot work. You may also consider covering your tools and any other portable property against loss or damage and obviously any motor vehicles or plant & machinery that you own.

Can you provide me with other insurance policies?

I'm a sole trader, do I need insurance?

Yes, definitely. You have the same exposure as a company, plus you can be held personally liable. At a minimum you should have Public & Products Liability insurance to protect you against claims by third parties for any damage you may cause to property, or injury caused to another person. If you have employees you will also need Workers Compensation to cover the medical & rehab costs associated with injury to employees, as well as their loss of earnings. If you do not have employees, you would be wise to have a Personal Accident & Sickness policy to cover your loss of earnings in the event you cannot work. You may also consider covering your tools and any other portable property against loss or damage and obviously any motor vehicles or plant & machinery that you own.

Are my tools covered?

Not under the Public & Products Liability insurance, which covers third party property damage only. You will need to take the additional Tools Insurance to cover loss or damage to your tools.

Are my employees covered if they cause damage to property or injure someone?

Yes, the policy extends to your employees, however not contractors, sub-contractors or labour hire personnel.

Am I covered for injury to my employees?

No, such coverage is provided under a Workers Compensation policy, which is required by law where you have employees (including working directors).

Am I covered if a change my business activities?

Any changes to your business activities must be approved by the underwriter in advance. You are covered for the business activities noted in your Schedule of Insurance. If you are to change your business activities, please call us beforehand.

Is there an excess I have to pay in the event of a claim?

Yes, the excess is $500 each & every event.

Are my sub-contractors covered?

No, the policy excludes liability of contractors and sub-contractors (also labour hire personnel you may hire into your business). You will be covered for your vicarious liability arising from the actions of these tradespersons, however the insurer will likely seek recovery from the negligent party. As such you should ensure that all contractors, sub-contractors and labour hire personnel you engage have their own Public & Products Liability and Workers Compensation insurance.

Can I change my policy limit at any time?

Yes, however an extra premium will likely apply.

Am I covered whilst working anywhere within Australia?

Yes, the policy covers you whilst carrying out your business anywhere in Australia.
